Marriage Actually - An honest look at marriage

Where Have All The Starbucks Gone?

Okay, So Marye & I have our weekly date. We go to Starbucks for coffee and a respite from everything else that is going on in our lives. It’s our time alone to talk about us, our relationship, plans, dreams. We even have our favorite barista, Chris.

Chris has even concocted a special brew for us, after they discontinued our Maple Macchiattos. This is time we take for us, no matter what is going on. It is an important part of our week.

What was corporate office thinking? Don’t they know how crucial this time we share together as a couple at their establishment is?

Alright, I’ll give you that one . I may be taking the closing of 600 Starbucks nationwide too seriously. But as a couple we value that time so much that if we miss that connection, our week is not complete. As parents of 8, it is not impossible to make time to spend together. We can try. But oh! Not without interruptions. Whether it is one of the kids, the phone, a friend just popping in to talk with Marye. You catch my drift.

It is our time and it is important to our marriage relationship, even if it is a quickie. It is an investment in Marye that is worth it. Because she is worth it. Even

when I have been out of work, or when Nick was sick and in Children’s Hospital we have made an effort to make sure we have “our” time.

There was that one time Marye was so sick and she couldn’t leave home, I set up a table & two chairs in our rose garden. Then without Marye knowing I slipped down to Starbucks and brought our coffees home. We had our date there. I threatened any of the kids who might even think of interrupting us.

That one was special.

I guess we will survive the closing of our favorite Starbucks at Hampton & Pleasant Run. The new one at I-35E just isn’t the same. But when that day comes, we will still have our time.

It may be a different time, and a different place, as time goes by…

I think it’s great to have the “us” time. Especially since me and my soon-to-be husband have completly different schedules. He works 1pm until 12am whereas I work 10am until 6pm. It’s hard to find time to spend together but we do cherish the time we do have.

Welcome from one Texan to another. :)

    Liz,
You must be to be able to get time together with your fiance. Other wise I don’t imagine you would be engaged. Seriously though, You guys will have to make a extra effort, knowing your schedules are a challenge. There are a lot of adjustments. BTW … Congratulations!!!
