When Your Friends Get Divorced

by Bald Man on July 13th, 2008

i can has divorce?
Here’s a question for you: Let’s say you’re friends with another married couple. The four of you get along pretty well until one day you don’t. Or rather, they stop getting along with each other, and eventually they get divorced. What do you do? Double dates are, um, out of the question. Do you go with the third wheel approach? Does someone wind up getting cut out of the picture altogether? Kerri and I haven’t had to deal with this, but we have friends who have, so I thought it might make an interesting question.

1 opinion for When Your Friends Get Divorced

I think it kind of depends on the divorce, and the circumstances under which you became friends in the first place.

For example, I would find it hard to socialize with someone if they just up and abandoned their family and all of their familial obligations. It does seem really hard to believe that someone I would like in the first place is capable of such a thing. But then again, people do crazy things.

Assuming that nothing during the divorce revealed a character trait that would make someone a bad friend or person, I would like to think that my husband and I would treat both spouses like we would treat any other single friend. I know one thing for sure, I would not react positively towards requests to “choose sides” or ditch one of the former spouses all together.
