Marriage Actually - An honest look at marriage

Pay attention…

by Kerri on June 24th, 2008

No, not to me.

Well, right now to me. Then not.

Allow me one more annoyance for Bald Man this week. Just one. And it starts when he comes home from work, stands at the computer to check his e-mail, and the kids notice he’s there.

Kid: Daddy?

….

Kid: Daddy!

….

Kid: DADDY!

Daddy: What?

Kid: Can I (fill in an activity)?

….

Kid: Can I, Daddy?

….

Kid: DADDY! Can I?

Daddy: Can you what?

And do you know why it’s so frustrating to me?

Because it’s a mirror of how I am with the kids most of the day.

And it’s an example of how Bald Man and I are to each other quite often as well.

Our attention gets so quickly snatched by the computer, the TV, a good book, the phone, etc. It gets stolen away from our kids, our spouses, our family, our friends.

Have you allowed your attention to be given in the wrong direction? Or maybe not a wrong direction, but not enough of it to the best directions?

Stop reading this blog (for the moment). Shut the laptop. Turn off the TV. Hug your kid. Kiss your spouse. Call your friend. Relationships should always come first.

OMG. I could have written that myself. My husband has his laptop right next to the couch, so he is constantly ignoring our son in order to mess around on his computer. And then, he always has to have the tv on, which annoys the dickens out of me. I prefer no tv, full attention to our son most of the time. That’s probably why I never get stuff done!

Good thing I read this post after catching up on all my blogging, so I can follow your advice and unplug! :)

This is a funny post…but true. My husband and I used to spend our evenings sitting on the couch watching T.V together or talking. That changed once we bought our laptops this past October. We still sit together in the evenings. But now, I’m on my end of the couch with my laptop and headphones, and he’s on other end with his laptop. I love the mobility of a laptop, but it can kill a person’s couple time.

Maria: I had to laugh at that last line. It probably IS why you get nothing done! Except love and pay attention to your son. What could be more valuable? ;)

The Wife: Ha! But there’s always something else to look at, isn’t there? So we’ll still count it as a victory. :)

Valencia: Absolutely. I still tell Bald Man it’s his fault. Before he introduced me to blogging, I was only on the computer once or twice a WEEK to check my e-mail. :P
