Maybe Twin Beds Are a Good Idea

by Bald Man on June 12th, 2008

twin beds
Sleep has not come easily for either Kerri or me this week. She’s experiencing a bout of insomnia again, something she’s battled pretty regularly for a number of months now. I have had a couple sleepless nights stressing over work. And although both of us have been going to bed late - not that that’s a good thing - we haven’t generally managed to go to be at the SAME late. So when one of us gets in or out of bed the other, who has inevitably just gotten into a decent sleep, is awoken.

Perhaps all those TV couples who slept in separate beds had it right. Twin beds give each of you the freedom to come or go as you need with far less chance of waking the other. It makes cuddling a bit more difficult, but with our contrasting tolerances for heat cuddling never lasts too long anyway. My grandparents are the only married couple I know of who sleep in separate beds, but as I understand it that had more to do with WWII nightmares than anything else.

What do you think? Know any married couples who voluntarily sleep in separate beds? Getting kicked to or volunteering for the couch because of a fight doesn’t count. :) Think there is anything to it? Perhaps Rob and Laura Petrie were right.

I know I can’t speak for everyone, but falling asleep next to my wife is one of my favorite parts of the day. I would hate sleeping in separate beds, even if it means I have to sacrifice a little leg room.

I just had this conversation with a recently divorced friend. She knew her marriage was over when sleeping in separate beds didn’t phase either of them. I steal the covers, he makes me too hot - but look forward to the moments before sleep and think it’s an important bonding time for spouses.

We have a HUGE bed (King), so I don’t even notice when my husband comes to bed late, and he doesn’t notice when I leave in the morning. When we go to bed together, we love to snuggle and fall asleep, though we quickly roll apart. Lucky me, he’s usually hot, so I get all of the blankets I want. :)
