Marriage Actually - An honest look at marriage

Tagged….

by Kerri on April 2nd, 2008

Hey! I was tagged by Kelly for a “7 things about me” meme. I thought I’d focus it on marriage, and maybe just share 7 things no one ever told me about marriage.

1. I would miss having my own bed. Not that I miss it every night, but it is odd to have your own bed for the first 20 some years of your life, then immediately have to get used to sleeping with someone else. Someone who makes noises, and doesn’t like the fan on all the time, and who cares that the sheets are all bunched up instead of laying neat and flat while you sleep. Who knew?

2. I would, in a hormonal rage, be ready to throttle another human being for forgetting the hot sauce. “What do you mean you forgot the hot sauce? I specifically asked for the hot sauce! That’s the only thing I really wanted from the whole order was the hot sauce!!!” Followed by a struggle not to weep over the hot sauce. It wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t married because I wouldn’t have forgotten the hot sauce. ;)

3. I would be happy to kick him out for a night with the buddies (like tonight) just to have the peace and quiet of an evening of doing whatever the heck I wanted. Who knew I’d want some time apart when we spent the first few years together being around each other as much as possible?

4. I would enjoy watching Jackie Chan movies, or any other kind of action/hero flicks. Never saw that one coming, but Chan is hilarious.

5. That I would be more wooed by him putting the kids to bed, cleaning up the dinner dishes, or folding loads of laundry than by receiving any bunch of roses. The poetry still ranks up there, though. :)

6. That, 10 years later, I would still be as excited as the kids to see him walking through the door at the end of the day.

7. That we would still be struggling with issues stemming from our personality differences 10 years into the marriage! Okay, so maybe someone (ahem…our pastor in pre-marital counseling…) did, but I’m not sure I believed them. The work truly never ends, but is still so worth it.

What were your marriage unknowns or surprises?
