Marriage Records

So, I’m meandering the Google for a fresh idea or two on “marriage,” and what should appear on the first page of search results? No, not us… at least not yet; but Marriage Records.
Huh… who knew? Of course I felt compelled to sample their offerings. I started with a piece from Dash! by Jordan Dykstra. (Find it here.) How would I describe it? Dissonant. Amelodic. A musical tribute to Jackson Pollock, for every time the hint of a song appears it is destroyed. While I like Pollock’s paintings, I don’t fancy that in my musical taste. Perhaps it’s for you; not my cup of tea.
Next, I sampled “Mystic Prism” by White Rainbow. (Find it here.) This one is far more accessible. The static drone that acts as a foundation caught me off guard, but once the tribal rhythms started I got into it. You won’t be hearing this on American Idol anytime soon… if for no other reason it’s got no discernible lyrics… but I like it. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it pop up on a soundtrack.
Finally, I tried “Scuby” by Soft Powr. (Find it here.) The recording very low-fi. Simple hand-drums, I think, an electric rhythm guitar, some keyboards and a couple male vocalists. I didn’t pick up enough of the lyrics to know what the saga of Scuby, but I rarely catch lyrics on the first or tenth listen. Overall: it’s a gentle, ballad that I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to again.
Oh… and if you ever want to read about music from people who are bound to be more in the know than me, check out the b5media Music Channel.

Yuck. A Pollock musical representation of a marriage sounds like a marriage on the brink of divorce.

Interesting critique. Also interesting chain of review. I can’t say much about the White Rainbow or Little Wings songs, although I think they’re both great, but I can tell you that the Dash! track was written on a hot sweaty summer day in Glendora, CA. It was inspired by the Terry Riley’s “A Rainbow in Curved Air” which I listened to consistently for about 3 weeks that summer in Pasadena where I drove around and picked up summer school supplies for 3rd graders. It was hot as fuck. Guitar and Whammy pedal cooled me right down.
Thanks for checking it out Bald Man!

Jordash,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. You just never know who the Internets will lead across your path. Best wishes. I’m sure I’ll be back to Marriage Records to sample more stuff in the future.
