Marriage Actually - An honest look at marriage

Come Sail Away With Me…

by Kerri on November 29th, 2007

So, this year marked my and Bald Man’s 10th anniversary, and the plan was to take a special trip, just the two of us. It’s almost the end of the year and we haven’t quite gotten away, yet! So, we may be looking into a 10 1/2 year anniversary trip. :)

But, it has me thinking again of where we’d want to go together. We didn’t have a honeymoon (funds were tight at the time), but were able to put together a fairly reasonably priced trip to Hawaii a few months before our oldest was born. We had a good time (hard not to there!), but since it was the first real trip we’d taken as a couple, we realized that there were still so many things that we had to learn about each other, including how to vacation together!

Other than that trip 7 years ago, we’ve only had one other weekend getaway together (as far as I can remember), so I’m thinking now of even what we’d want to do this time. Hawaii’s not in the picture this year, but maybe we could swing a bed and breakfast for a few days or something.

Are you able to get away together as a couple? Where do you go? Any place you’d highly recommend in the US Midwest? ;)

We haven’t been away alone together since the kids were born, but I maintain hope that someday it will happen. Still, I think a weekend would be enough. We know each other well now and after two nights of sleeping through the night, we’d both miss the kids.

Kate: I hope you get that time together soon! I wouldn’t want to be away from the kids for too long, either. But a few days couldn’t hurt! Maybe a week, or two. :P

I feel your pain…My family tactfully refused to watch our kids for our 10th anniversary getaway, so we booked a local hotel to go with the kids (2 and 4 years old) And then they got the flu. My sister and her husband took the room instead so we didn’t just lose the deposit, well they paid for it…but they also didn’t offer to just sit for us…

Getting time alone with my husband is the biggest challenge since kids. At least he’s the kind of man who when he’s at work, he’s working, and when he’s home, he’s with us, totally focused. Otherwise, I don’t know how survival is possible.
