Being Thankful
Okay, so, almost everyone has put Thanksgiving behind them for the year, and is looking forward to and preparing for Christmas. However, it is still November, and so I’m gonna take a minute to share a few more things to be thankful for! Gill spent the month sharing the list of things for which she is thankful. I obviously didn’t work it into the entire month, but I want to see if I can just quickly come up with 30 things to be thankful for in the following categories: 1)marriage in general 2)my marriage 3)weddings 4)whatever else I fill the end with in case I run out of things in the first 3 categories. Ready? Here goes:
1: I’m thankful that my hubby is bald and doesn’t take up precious time in front of the mirror with a hair dryer or gel or anything. There are five of us and only one bathroom! :P
2: I’m thankful for a hubby who likes leftovers. Cuz I don’t, but I hate wasting food. :P
3: I’m thankful for a partner who is good at and likes keeping the books. Cuz I don’t.
4: I’m thankful to be married to my best friend.
5: I’m thankful to have a spouse with whom and I can be honest and open about everything and anything without any fear of running him off or angering him. See #4.
6: I’m thankful for a spouse who will do things he doesn’t particular enjoy because he knows that I do.
7: I’m thankful for a spouse who will get up and go do the day-job thing everyday so that I can be home doing the stay at mom thing. It works well for us.
8: I’m thankful for an automatic date for weddings.
9: I’m thankful to not be in the dating market. I haven’t been for a very long time. From the stories of my friends who are, I’m glad I don’t have to be.
10: I’m thankful for a mate who has two or three meals that he can whip up in a jiffy should the need arise.
11: I’m thankful for someone to snuggle at night.
12: I’m thankful for someone who doesn’t mind the fan running at night all through the winter. Or who can at least deal with it under his 60 layers of covers. :)
13: I’m thankful for a mate who stayed strong when we went to serious budgeting and who kept us on track so that we are currently credit-card free, and with no outstanding credit card debt. Freeing.
14: I’m thankful for a spouse who urges me to grow and become better where I can, but who never makes me feel that I’m not perfectly wonderful just as I am.
15: I’m thankful for a spouse who always leaves the best, safest car at home should his family need to be out and about.
16: I’m thankful for someone to sit and watch TV with and laugh with as we do.
17: I’m thankful for someone who always lets me know that he’s proud to be out with me and married to me, no matter how I feel about myself at that moment.
18: I’m thankful for a second closet worth of t-shirts and sweatshirts to “borrow” (which might imply that I ask, which I don’t, so maybe “steal” would be a better word for that. :P ).
19: I’m thankful for a second sock drawer to borrow steal from.
20: I’m thankful for one person in the world with whom I can be completely myself.
21: I’m thankful to share a home with someone who shares my “open door policy” in our home. Makes for some fun times. :) (Not “open marriage.” Entirely different thing. Thought I should make that clear!)
22: I’m thankful for a spouse who shares my need from some alone time, even from each other occasionally. SPACE!!!
23: I’m thankful for a hubby who knows my need to escape the house occasionally and go out with some friends!
24: I’m thankful I don’t ever have to plan a wedding again. At least not my own. Or wear a dress with a big a** bow!!!! Literally, that’s where the bow went, on my big…anyway….
25: I’m thankful to be married to someone who respects and loves his family and mine (both the family we made, and the families we came from).
26: I’m thankful for a spouse who can listen as well as talk when things need to be addressed.
27: I’m thankful for friends and family who support and strengthen our marriage.
28: I’m thankful for someone who still remembers who he was before I met him, and still enjoys and pursues some of the activities that are huge parts of his life.
29: I’m thankful for all of you who share bits and pieces of your lives with all of us here, both the good and the bad.
30: I’m thankful for 10 years of being married to the one I want to wake up to everyday for the rest of my life.
Wow! Wasn’t that fast?!?! :P
Okay, you are now free to move past Thanksgiving and into Christmas! :P

I’m thankful that my friends fight with their husbands too. A few months ago we were going through a hard time and I was complaining to friends who seemed so happy. Now I’m the content one and they are the complainers. I am grateful that I’m not the only one who finds marriage difficult.

Tracee: Agreed! I think marriage is one of the hardest things I’ve ever been a part of. It’s good to have friends to talk to who know how hard it can be, and can let you vent and process while realizing how very much you still love your spouse.

I’m grateful you submitted this to the Carnival of Family Life (on holiday with me in Australia this week) because it is a really lovely reminder to us all - be grateful for the family we’ve got. I’m a therapist and I know there’s lots of families that nobody else would want.
Take care. I REALLY liked your post.
