His n’ Hers Christmas Presents

OK, I’ve got yet another question for you: How do you handle Christmas presents for each other? Kerri and I have probably experimented with most of the variations - except not getting anything - but have yet to settle into any norm. Presents are a big deal to Kerri, so I have usually gotten something for her as a surprise, even if that something was relatively small. Recently we’ve gone in on a charitable gift together. I seem to remember going together on something a bit more lavish at some point pre-children, too.
What do you do? Do you surprise each other? Do you plot out a combined gift in advance? Do you forgo gifts altogether?
Oh yeah: If you do get each other surprise gifts, how do you keep it secret? How do you account for the missing cash? Where to you stash it? How do you sneak it in? Inquiring minds want to know!

Yet another argument against the joint accounts. At least, while it’s just the two of us.
Last year we did both the joint gift and a few smaller gifts for each other as a surprise, but then he went and got me an iPod. This year, we’ve just set spending limits. As in “don’t spend more than $100 on me”. We both always go over at least a little, but whatever. It’s Christmas!

101,
I’ll give you that separate accounts make surprise gifts easier, but I still see more downside that upside.
As the one who keeps track of our joint books, I’ll admit that I don’t think I’ve ever stuck to our agreed upon budget.

This year for Christmas I am “giving” my husband something he wants more than anything … I am decluttering the house. He loves every bag and box of stuff that goes out of the house!
