Marriage Actually - An honest look at marriage

Marriage Fitness 3

by Bald Man on October 8th, 2007

Let’s continue stepping our way through Marriage Fitness. See, that was a pun, because Marriage Fitness is centers on “The MarriageMax® 4-Step Plan.” (Those are the jokes people; get used to it.) This is an example of the self-help hype that I found off-putting. Anyway, here’s the Plan is brief; we’ll chat individually about each step in greater detail.

  1. Put Love First - This is about making your spouse your priority. Exercises focus on making time to be together.
  2. Give Presence - This is about knowing your spouse and expressing that knowledge. Exercises focus on giving gifts.
  3. Move from Me to We - This is about intertwining your interests and building a life together. Exercises focus on thinking and acting as one instead of as two individuals.
  4. Save Yourself - This is about establishing appropriate defenses that will minimize likely intruders into your marriage. The focus is on leaving behind some things to protect and strengthen the best thing, your marriage.

I suspect some will find their particular challenge may lie in any of the four steps. Each of them seem to speak counter to the prevailing wisdom of the culture.

Step 1 opposes the self-focus of our hyper-scheduled lives
Step 2 opposes the emotional root for expressing love
Step 3 opposes our the self-determination of our own lives
Step 4 opposes our self-confidence and sense of freedom
