King of Queens: Could your marriage survive it?
I was sitting in front of King of Queens the other night and ended up watching (again) what I think was the pilot episode. In case you haven’t seen it, the basic idea is that Doug and Carrie have just finished setting up the basement with a couch, sports pennants, and a big screen TV. Doug and his buds are so psyched to have a place to hang, and then…..
Arthur (Carrie’s dad) burns his house down and now needs a place to stay. And guess how quickly the not-so-bachelor pad turns into a father-in-law’s apartment of sorts. Hijinks, frustrations, comical situations, and all other sorts of craziness ensue (and you sometimes get to hear such classic lines as, “How ’bout a bowl of SHUT IT STEW?!?!?!” which makes me laugh every time.).
Anyway, that extremely enthralling recap was to get you to the question I asked myself while I was watching, “Would our marriage survive co-habitation with an in-law?” I’d like to think it would, but even just allowing myself to start down the line of thinking is just kind of scary. I don’t doubt that we would invite a parent to live with us if the need arose, though.
How many of you are out there living this reality? Was it as stressful as you thought it might be? Was it better than you guessed?
And for a bit of comic relief, a King of Queens bloopers reel. :)

I think we could survive a shorter duration of the in-laws…at least my husband’s family…than the three or four or how many ever seasons King of Queens has been on now, but years and years? I don’t think we’re ready for that. As for my family…maybe my dad and step-mom, but definitely not my mom. It’s strange…

Maria: I think it was actually 8 or 9 seasons. Crazy. But, yeah, that would be tough. Life would be completely different, I’d think. I can’t even imagine how we’d do it.
