“What We Have Here Is a Failure to Communicate”

As I continue to muse on what it means to express our identity truly vs. as an illusory image, let’s through this quote from “If the Buddha Married” into the mix (p. 127):
~ Anodea Judith, “Wheels of Life”
This might sound a bit too mystical and new-agey for some, but get past it if you can and hear its truth. Communication is what connects people. Without communication, we exist alone, separated from one another. Through a multitude of modes our lives are spent expressing our selves to one another. We express wants, desires, needs, hopes, fears, and more.
But what happens when we hide behind an self-promoted illusion? What happens when the messages we communicate have their origin in our illusory self instead of our true identity?

Communication fails… connections are not made… individuals remain isolated and alone. No matter how many people are in proximity to you, without communication you remain stranded on an island. Even if that person is your spouse.
That’s no way to spend a marriage. In the presence of the same person for years, sharing a home and even a bed… and yet all alone. So let us be aware of the masks we are tempted to hide behind and ruthlessly cast them aside. Let us have the courage to stand naked, as it were, before our spouses and communicate our true selves.

For if we cannot be honest and unashamed before our spouse, the one with whom we have made a lifelong commitment of love, where else and with whom else can we ever hope to connect?
