What is your definition of a date?
Bald Man and I actually made it out on a date this weekend. Yeah we did! It’s not very often that it happens anymore, so it’s a treat when it does. However, I did feel bad because I realized through this recent date that my expectations often ruin an otherwise great event.
This is true of me not just in dates, but in many special occasion situations. I have an expectation or hope in my head, and I dream about how fantastic it will be when it comes to fruition. One of the problems, though, is as old as the existence marriage and relationships. While I have this dream in my head, I don’t often communicate the details, I just expect others to know what I’m thinking (and “by others” I mean Bald Man). Or, I do communicate some of them, but fail to emphasize how much the success or failure of the event is determined by the execution of the details.
I’ve always said that I’m not a high-maintenance kind of girl. In general, I think that’s true. However, when it comes to issues of emotions or special occasions, I think I have to revoke my previous perception of being low-maintenance. Such is the cost of self-realization.
And, of course, I only came to realize how very hard I am to please because Bald Man would ask, “Okay, so, if we do this, will it satisfy your date requirement?” Poor guy, I make him work so hard!
The date, however, was a roaring success. Bald Man made all of the babysitting arrangements, we sat in a park listening to a friend’s band (ruetschle) and a few others. We ate good food from people who worked hard to earn the money. And a good time was had by all. :P

Our best dates are those that are spontaneous so that I, like you, don’t have any expectations and just enjoy the night for what it is. It usually involves a good meal.
