Marriage Actually - An honest look at marriage

Did we tell you about the time we went to the wedding?

by Kerri on June 28th, 2007

Yeah, the same wedding referred to here.

So, we’re at a wedding for a friend from high school (actually, Cory’d known him since jr. high even, which makes this even funnier). Being that we’d known the groom for a long while, we knew his parents and siblings as well. However, our friend had moved from the area a while ago, and his parents even earlier than he had, so it had been quite a few years since we had seen them.

That’s the background, now you’re all caught up. :)

So, we get to the wedding and have a good time and get to the reception and continue to have a good time and at some point we meet up with the groom’s family and chat with them a bit.

Let me correct that, I chat with them a bit. They didn’t really chat too much with Cory. It wasn’t a big deal, but we weren’t sure why.

So, the next morning we show up to the breakfast held for all those who traveled for the wedding. As we’re sitting there, the groom’s parents come up to us and start apologizing—to Cory. For not recognizing him the night before. Apparently, they parted with us the night before thinking, “We were sure that we’d heard that Kerri married Cory. Who was that guy that was with her?”

Now, they had met Cory as a pre-teen, and knew him up through high school. I can’t imagine what could have changed that drastically in his appearance as to render him unrecognizable from his high school self (hee-hee), but I’m guessing it’s the glasses.

Anyway, we all thought it was pretty funny. Because it was. :P

What I love, though, is that it would never have occurred to me that someone would not recognize Cory. In fact, it rarely even occurs to me that he looks any different than the guy I met in high school. (Have I mentioned that I’m not known for my keen observation skills?) I think that’s because I never notice the big changes. Being that I live with him and all, I see the little gradual changes that happen from day to day. Whereas others know the story of his life in chapter titles or bullet point outlines, I get to know the story of his life in the small details and unspoken moments.

And the coolest part of that, I think, is my story gets woven in and out of those lines as well. Though, apparently, not the lines where you’re no longer recognizable. :P

That is the most hilarious thing I have ever heard.

Since I look exactly the same as I did when I was 15. ahem. I know the less positive side of being reconized at gatherings such as these.

Kate: It really was hilarious. :D You do have a very young-looking face, don’t you? I’m sure there are many women who will tell you that you’ll appreciate that some day! (I can’t tell you, yet, I’m too young to know. :P)
